The Foundation Year Programme admits approximately 100 students annually to its English-language course.
If you feel that your knowledge in the natural sciences or English is not yet sufficient to begin one of our regular degree programmes, the Foundation Year (Preparatory Course) provides an excellent opportunity to strengthen your academic foundation. The programme is organized by the Albert Szent-Györgyi Medical School and is designed for students who wish to reinforce their understanding of basic sciences before entering one of the University’s health science degree programmes.
The curriculum offers intensive instruction and review in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, and English Language. Students who demonstrate strong academic performance throughout the eight-month course have a high probability of gaining automatic admission to their first-choice programme among the following five health science degree options in the subsequent academic year:
6-year Medicine Programme (MD)
5-year Dentistry Programme (DMD)
5-year Pharmacy Programme (DPharm)
4-year Physiotherapy Programme (BSc Physio)
4-year Nursing Programme (BSc N)
The Foundation Year provides an especially solid preparation for the Dentistry Programme (DMD), as it enables students to consolidate their scientific knowledge and develop the academic and language skills necessary for success in pre-clinical and clinical dental studies.

The Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) Programme at the University of Szeged, Faculty of Dentistry, admits approximately 60 students each year to its English-Language Programme.
During the first two years, students acquire a comprehensive foundation in the basic medical and dental sciences, which serve as the essential basis for clinical dentistry. In the second year, practical training begins, as students learn and practice fundamental dental procedures on manikins in pre-clinical laboratory settings.
From the third year onward, increasing emphasis is placed on the study of dental diseases, diagnostic methods, and therapeutic techniques. The final two years of the curriculum are devoted to intensive clinical training across all major disciplines of dentistry, focusing on the assessment, treatment, and comprehensive management of patients.
Throughout their studies, students participate in elective courses, clinical conferences, and hospital-based practical training, ensuring well-rounded professional development and competence in all aspects of dental practice.
1. Applicants are required to be over the age of 18 in the year of application (by December 31).
2. Applications are accepted from graduates of accredited high schools or colleges/universities. According to the decision of the Admission Committee of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Szeged, students who have failed any subject in the final year of their high school studies are not entitled to apply to our programmes.
3. You are also eligible to complete your online application and sit for an entrance examination if you are in your final year but have not received your School Leaving Certificate or Diploma yet. In this case, you must present proof that you are attending high school.
4. Applicants are required to sit for an entrance examination. Applicants are allowed to participate in a maximum of two examinations in one application period if the chance is offered by the Faculty.
5. Holders of the following degrees can be exempted from sitting for the entrance examination:
GCE A2 levels
Students are required to achieve grade A in three natural science subjects
(Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics) and English language
Predicted A2 level grades are considered for conditional acceptance.
GCE AS/O level grades are not considered to meet university requirements.
IB Diploma
Students are required to achieve grade 5 in two natural science subjects
(Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics) and English language.
In your final year, predicted grades are considered for conditional acceptance.
IB Certificates are not considered to meet exemption requirements.
BSc Degree
First Class Honours Bachelor of Science Degree in Natural, Biomedical, Life Sciences, Chemistry, Biology and Physics and Dental Hygiene if studies were pursued in English language.
Students who have successfully pursued dental medicine studies in English at other accredited universities may apply for admission to the University of Szeged, Faculty of Dentistry, without being required to take an entrance examination.
The conditions of transfer are determined by the Faculty. Admission to a higher academic year may be granted if the subjects completed in the applicant’s previous studies are identical or at least 75% equivalent to those included in the curriculum of the University of Szeged.
Please note that at least 50% of the complete dental medicine studies must be completed at the University of Szeged in order to obtain the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree.
