Undergraduate education

The Department of Prosthodontics provides education in prosthetic rehabilitation including dental materials and odontotechnology, preclinical courses and dental implantology.
Prosthetic dentistry is the specialization which deals with the restoration and maintenance of oral function, comfort, and health of the patient by replacing the missing teeth and surrounding structures with biomaterials. Patients with simple and advanced prosthetic problems are treated in the department, including implant prosthetic treatment and therapy of temporo-mandibular disorders, as well as prosthetic rehabilitation of cheilo-, gnatho-, palatoschisis.

The education consists of lectures, laboratory and clinical sessions. Students learn the theoretical background of prosthetic dentistry step by step, from studies related to dental materials and technology through learning about occlusal anatomy according to Lundeen, they practice clinical and dental technology procedures in the students’ lab.

There are a number of laboratory sessions sufficient to acquire practice in tooth preparation, impression taking, etc. before treating the first patients from the 8th semester onwards.
Patients are selected for the students according to the curriculum concerned. Crowns and bridges are prepared in the first clinical semester, followed by complete dentures and fixed/removable – combined - prosthodontics in the 9th and 10th semester. Thanks to the good reputation of the university clinic in the region, there are plenty of patients available for the students’ courses. Students treat their patients in small groups, under the supervision of experienced tutors.

Some of our teachers have spent long periods at prosthetic departments of well-known West-European dental schools. There is a favorable teacher/student ratio in the practical classes, which makes it possible to discuss questions and repeat theory before commencing with the treatment of the patients. In this way, knowledge is applied directly in practice. Dental implantology is also incorporated in the curriculum with the modern aspect of backward planning.

The department applies the combination of “classical teaching” and “problem-based learning”, whereby treatment plans are made by the students on the basis of previously acquired theoretical knowledge, after discussing the treatment options for the particular cases with experienced tutors; it provides a good chance to bring theory to practice in the 5th year, before graduation.

Postgraduate education

Postgraduate students have the possibility to deepen their theoretical knowledge and practical skill in all fields of prosthodontics. They can discuss their treatment plans and cases with experienced tutors. The students attend theoretical courses organized in Hungary in collaboration with other dental schools, so they can visit other professors' lectures to widen their knowledge.
