Periodontology

periodontoloji-41

Undergraduate teaching

As far as the reasons of tooth loss are concerned, periodontal disease is the second most frequent cause leading to loosing a tooth. Prevention of caries is more effective than the prevention of periodontal disease, and in the near future more and more elderly people will have to be treated with more periodontally involved teeth. These factors give the importance of the periodontology.

Learning periodontology involves the ability to identify different type as of periodontal diseases and mastering the skills needed to treat them. In the case of the discipline at hand, we emphasize the practical side of teaching. Unfortunately, a lot of people in Hungary suffer from chronic inflammatory periodontal diseases. During your study you will have an opportunity to familiarize yourself with acute and chronic periodontal problems, and also treat them yourself. If you are especially enthusiastic about this field of dentistry, you may participate in some scientific experiments and, at the end of your studies, write up your thesis in this area of study.

Most of the students believe that surgical treatment modalities are the most important area of treating periodontal problems. Actually, conservative treatment has more significance in curing periodontal diseases. We provide the student with an opportunity to assist in performing such treatments. During the study period, students can learn about the diagnosis of periodontal diseases, planning of the periodontal treatment, scaling, and root planning, subgingival curettage and gingivectomy. They should also be familiar with the theory of the different types of flap surgery, guide tissue regeneration, bone regeneration, and augmentation methods.

Post-graduate education

During their post-graduate course, students learn everything they need for working independently and in a comprehensive way. In addition to surgical periodontal treatment, comprehensive work also includes, in the correction phases, endodontic or prosthetic procedures, as well as following up the patients during orthodontic treatment. Most challenging of all is surgical treatment; students are expected to acquire skills in resective, reconstructive, and regenerative surgery. The specialization program also includes studying implantology, making implantations, and treating perimplantitis. They also learn about treating patients with systemic diseases and the connection between systemic and periodontal diseases. In addition, postgraduate students are required to become familiar with direct or indirect effects of different drugs on the periodontal tissues.
