Preclinical Course of Oral Surgery

Dentoalveolar surgery training at the University of Szeged has a long-standing tradition of excellence. The rich heritage of oral, dental and maxillofacial surgery training dates back to the 1960’s. In line with international professional trends, the department was recently divided into two units. The surgery department was split into a Department of Dentoalveolar Surgery and a newly established Department of Maxiallofacial Surgery.
The Department of Dentoalveolar Surgery offers practical courses combined with patient care. From simple tooth extractions to complex dental surgery operations, students get acquainted with both theoretical and practical aspects of patient treatment. In the outpatient unit, a large number of basic treatments are performed, predominantly by fourth- and fifth-year dentistry students, under the supervision of experienced dental surgeons. The department also performs one-day operations and implantations, collaborates with several dental implant manufacturing companies, and is active in the fields of research and innovation as well.

The department also offers training at a higher level. A three-year postgraduate course in dentoalveolar surgery is available to all qualified dentists who comply with the high requirements for becoming a dental surgeon.
A specially equipped operation theatre with staff and facility for special patient after-care is available, where treatments under nitrogen dioxide and also general anaesthesia may be performed.

The Department is also engaged in some special fields of dentistry. Oral medicine is the science that deals with oral lesions, including precancerous stages and oral symptoms of general medical diseases. Diagnosis, treatment planning and early stage treatment are carried out in our department. Cases with extended lesions are, however, transferred to the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery. A special team, comprising dentists, surgeons, and technicians, is available to carry out rehabilitation of patients with extra-oral defects.
The above fields of expertise available at the Department offer students a chance to master and practice all fields of dental surgery from the basics to highly specialized treatment.
